Elizabethan Gawthorpe was restored in the mid 19th century by Sir Charles Barry, who created the lavish interiors that can be seen today. These interiors are complemented by Jacobean and Victorian furniture. A loan from the National Portrait Gallery adds to the notable paintings already displayed here. Also there is an unparalleled collection of needlework assembled by Rachel Kay Shuttleworth the last family member to live here - which is a nationally important textile collection. The Great Barn, which has been recently restored, is used for regular events and exhibitions.
