Platt Hall

Platt Fields Park,

Fallowfield

Manchester

Location Map

Most people visit Platt hall for its famous Gallery of Costume, which is one of the Manchester City Art Galleries, but the house itself is worth a visit.

It was built of brick in 1762-64 on the site of the timber-framed manor house of the Worsley family. Designed on the then fashionable 'Palladian' manner, totally symmetrical in appearance with a tall central block flanked by lower pavilions containing the kitchens and the stables.

Inside, the reception rooms were on the first floor, approached by a staircase with an elegant wrought iron balustrade. The dining room is located above the front door and has rich plasterwork on the walls and ceiling.
