Smithills Hall

Smithills Dean Rd,

Bolton

Standing now on the edge of a 2000 acre country park, Smithills Hall was begun in the mid fourteenth century and is the oldest timber-framed manor house in Lancashire.

The hall and solar have fine roofs and were built by the Radclyffe family. They have little furniture as they would have been originally, The long family wing was built by Andrew Burton in the early sixteenth century to extend the cross-wing at right angles to the hall, and now forms part of the courtyard. It has a big bay window, magnificent linenfold panelling and some glass of the same date in the windows of the chapel.

Entry charge.
