Built in stages during the sixteenth century, Speke is the finest timber framed manor house in Lancashire and with its lozenge shape panels, its gables and tall brick chimneys, the most picturesque one. there are later rooms and later furniture, but the best parts date from elizabethan times. The hall with its panelling, the battlemented fireplace, the portrait of a giant, and the great parlour , where the plaster ceiling of about 1600 is decorated in high releif with grapes, pomegranates and roses, and where the geat chimney piece of about 1560 is naively carved to represent three generations of the Norris family who built the house.
