The North West has
a variety of historical monuments and fortifications
some of which date back to the 14th century and
beyond. Steeped in history, many are open to the public at regular times.
The largest Roman amphitheatre in Britain,
partially excavated. It was used for entertainment and military training by
the 20th Legion, based at the fortress of Deva.
