and is one of Britain's finest small art galleries.

Border Regiment Museum
Carlisle Castle
The
Border Regiment Museum contains the history of
Cumbria's County Infantry Regiment, the Border Regiment and the King's Own
Royal Border Regiment and local Militia.
Displays comprise uniforms,
weapons, equipment, medals (including four VCs), silver, pictures,
memorabilia, dioramas, video presentations and anti-tank guns. Outside is a
25-Pounder Field Gun of 1940 and a Ferret Scout Car.
Within the Castle walls are the
barrack and other military buildings dating from the 19th century. The museum
has a shop with many souvenirs and publications.

This is a
museum where everyone can re-live their childhood.
The museum exhibits a wide
selection of mainly British toys from 1900 to the present in adjoining
carefully restored late 18th Century buildings.
There are many visitor operated displays including
0 and 00 gauge tinplate trains, Scalextric cars, Meccano, Lego models and
even a helicopter to fly. Whatever your age there should be something to
remind you of your childhood.

spectacular modern museum built over an original Victorian Graving Dock. Here
you can explore the fascinating history of Barrow-in-Furness, and discover
how it grew from a tiny 19th Century hamlet to the biggest iron and steel
centre in the world. The galleries and dockside
site include a special exhibitions gallery, and a landscaped site with an
adventure playground.
There is a cafe and a museum
shop, and ample free car parking. Admission is free.

Wordsworth's home from 1799 to 1808.
The award winning museum
displays the Wordsworth Trust's unique collection of manuscripts, books and
paintings interpreting the life and work of Wordsworth, his family and

Mining for minerals in
Lakeland and Northern England dates back to Roman times
and the museum exhibits some of the finest Northern England mineral
specimens. There is an extensive range of miner's
lamps, tools and artefacts. An unusual feature of the museum is the
impressive fluorescent display of minerals. A wide
range of mineral and fossil specimens can be purchased to suit everyone from
the beginner to the serious collector in the
adjoining Museum Shop.

The Printing Museum has a varied
and fascinating range of printing presses brought together from all over
Britain. The collection is housed in a building dating back to the 16th
Century. Walking round the museum takes you on a journey through time,
starting with a display describing printing from its 15th Century origins.

The recently refurbished museum
is housed in an
Elizabethan building which was altered in 1670 and used as a school until the
early 1970's. Here you can see
the history, geology and archaeology of the Penrith area. Exhibits include
some Roman pottery from the Roman Fort near Plumpton, and 'cup and ring'
stones from Maughanby.
