Lancaster - a proud city, rich in heritage.
This is the 'county town' of Lancashire. The castle, one of the best preserved in England, was established by the Normans
around 1093 in the same
location originally chosen by the invading Romans. The castle gateway is known as John O'Gaunt's Tower and has a
statue of him above the entrance.
Down by the river you'll find a warehouse which is home to the Maritime
Museum, St George's Quay, entered through
the Old Custom House. The City Museum on Market Street has displays on Neolithic, Roman, medieval and Georgian
Lancaster.
Much of the city centre has been pedestrianised – look out for some of the quaint signs that still jut out from
the walls above Lancaster’s older shops.
Within the Marketgate centre is Lancaster Market where you will find
friendly stalls offering fresh local produce together with others offering a wide range of goods from quality leather bags
to collectors’ CDs.
