St Helens is an industrial
town located approximately halfway between Manchester and Liverpool.
Formally part of Lancashire, St.
Helens is now in Merseyside
St. Helens was built on the
glass industry. This was mainly because sand and coal were both
available locally. The Sankey Canal that runs into the heart
of the town was the first canal in Britain and was built to
transport the materials. Pilkington glass works is still a main
employer in the town and The World Of Glass, a museum
dedicated to the glass industry, is also located here.
The town also has recently
renovated shopping areas, several good night clubs, and water sports
are available on the nearby Carr Mill Dam.
