The gallery houses prints, drawings, modern art, sculpture, the country's largest holding of textiles and wallpapers outside London, and an internationally famous collection of British watercolours.
An ever changing programme of displays and temporary exhibitions is organised with a series of talks and activities, including family events at weekends.
