Take a trip to remember on the world's first and the UK's only working boat lift.

Experience the fully restored Anderton Boat Lift with a passage aboard the Edwin Clarke trip boat. A visitor centre, interactive displays, cafe, gift shop and children's play area add up to a great day out for all the family.

In the early part of the 1870’s it was decided to build a physical link between the canal and river at Anderton to eliminate the cost, effort and wastage involved in hand transportation. Edward Leader Williams, the Engineer of the Weaver Navigation Trustees in consultation with Edwin Clarke a prominent civil engineer, produced a design that was a unique and magnificent example of the Victorian’s mastery of cast iron and hydraulics.

English Heritage contributed £500, 000 towards the cost of putting the Anderton Boat Lift back into working order and it has now become one of the premier industrial heritage sites in the UK.
