A cross-shaped setting of standing stones, dating to around 3000bc, unique in Scotland, outstanding in Great Britain. The visitor centre is managed by Urras Nan Tursachan.

King Robert The Bruce's Cave

World famous ancient monument of King Robert The Bruce's Cave. Robert The Bruce, born at Lochmaben Castle in 1274, was crowned King of Scotland in 1306. In the winter of 1313 after suffering defeat, King Robert went into hiding in the cave spending three months living a solitary existence at a time when the wars of Independence were at their bleakest for the Scots. King Robert then went forth from the cave on the Cove Estate, raised an army and won the Historic Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, even though he was outnumbered 10 to 1. He established his claim to the throne and thus the beginning of freedom Scotland.
Play area, picnic area and toilets all provided at the car parking area.

Smailholm Tower

6 miles west of Kelso on B6937, by Kelso near the village of Smailholm.

Set on a high rocky Knoll, this well preserved 16th century tower house holds an exhibition of tapestries and costume dolls depicting characters from Sir Walter Scott's Minstrelsy of the Borders.
